Razgatlioglu reacts to his third WorldSBK coronation on Sunday at Jerez: "We improved every race weekend thanks to my team’s hard work"
‘El Turco’ will depart the WorldSBK paddock as one of only four riders to ever win more than two World Championships after his season-closing triumph at Jerez
The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Champion’s resident alien, chronic record-breaker and beloved character on and off-track has completed his quest to again etch the name Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) into the history books of this sport. With his Race 2 P3 at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto, Andalucia, the defending Champion has made it back-to-back titles to raise his tally to third behind, tying Troy Bayliss and behind only Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha) and Carl Fogarty.
A PARTING GIFT: “This is my last year with BMW and in the WorldSBK paddock, I think I gave BMW a good gift before leaving”
After P2 in Saturday’s Race 1, the feeling around the paddock was that the morning’s Tissot Superpole Race was the likely event to see Toprak cap off what has been a dominant 2025 season. From tying his own record of 13 consecutive wins, to tying Colin Edwards’ record for most consecutive podiums, Toprak’s 2025 form rivalled and in some ways overcame even his mercurial 2024 benchmarks. All of the accolades this season and more couldn’t have prepared him for the shock that was in store for him in the first lap of the Superpole Race. Turning into Turn 5 on the opening lap, he made contact, sending him sliding out of the race into the gravel, and his title dreams somewhat back into contention.
On how it feels to lift the title for a third time, and his up and down Sunday, Razgatlioglu said: “The feeling is amazing, this weekend was a bit stressful because everything was going very well, especially on Saturday. Today I came to the track more relaxed, just needing a P7 in the Tissot Superpole Race, but we crashed in Turn 5. After that, I stayed calm and just focused on Race 2 because I just needed a strong performance there. In the end, we won the title! At the beginning of the season, we didn’t start strong, but we improved every race weekend thanks to my team’s hard work. This is my last year with BMW and in the WorldSBK paddock, I think I gave BMW a good gift before leaving for MotoGP. I’m very happy to win this title; it’s making me smile all the time. It’s very nice to break some records every year. If I were staying longer here in WorldSBK, I think I could have broken more. I would have liked to break Colin Edwards’ record for most consecutive podiums, but I’m moving to MotoGP to try out the racing over there. But who knows! Maybe I will be back again, I like this paddock”
PACING HIMSELF: I knew in Race 2 I needed to ride calmly from the beginning… I just needed to finish the race”
‘El Turco’ had his work cut out for him on Sunday afternoon. After not scoring in the Superpole Race, his title lead was diminished to 22 points, meaning that while he would need to score, the name of the game in Race 2 was to manage his pace and avoid an incident like he suffered earlier in the day. Not only did he manage to finish, but he made a stop by Parc Ferme to celebrate a P3 finish before riding off into the sunset on his way to joining MotoGP next season.
On how he responded to the Superpole Race tumble and his thoughts on his title rival, Razgatlioglu said: “I knew in Race 2 I needed to ride calmly from the beginning. I started from P10 with many riders in front of me. The other riders respected the Championship fight. I was pushing slowly not to ride too aggressively and make a mistake. If I had finished the Superpole Race, I would have won the title, but in Race 2, I just needed to finish the race. I was riding normally, not pushing too hard. We fought a lot with Nicolo in the last nine races, especially. Sometimes I won, other times he won, but always changing P1 and P2. We fought really well. He has improved a lot; he’s a really fast rider. Now, I’m just focusing on my next challenge in MotoGP. Next year, it looks like he will be the World Champion.”
